Biography

Gyz La Rivière (1976, Rotterdam) is one of the two HuMobisten and also works as a solo artist. He mainly does performances, makes videos and installations. Besides being an artist he does a lot
of design projects. Art started playing a role in his
life when he started skateboarding in 1987. Skateboarding opened a door to a whole new World for him.

His work is about being restless, empty, bored and saturated. In the western world there is a continuing drive for lust and reinventing ‘taste’. He likes to archive this process, so that he is capable of capturing time and separating himself from it. That way he is arranging time like a visual archivist.

Gyz is showing that one cannot understand his work without understanding the aesthetics of the ‘horizontal screen line’, the 25-frames-per-sec. rate
or the 3:4 aspect ratio he loves so much.

He gets his inspiration out of the enormous daily amount of images, infographics, logos, and icons that reach our perception through our mediatic culture and thru his daily work in art duo the HuMobisten. He researches cultural and social meanings separately and adds them to his personal (visual-)database. These images come from computer animations, toys, video games, fashion, photobooks, flyers, videos, movies, (glossy)magazines, newspapers, TV news broadcasts, stuff like that…

By cutting these images free from their original context and arranging them in a new autonomous one, he becomes a sort of producer/director using
the images as schizoid puzzle pieces of hyper realistic media installations.

He graduated in 2000 from the Willem de Kooning academy in Rotterdam, where he studied fashion. The same year he started ‘HuMobisten’ together
with Rufus Ketting.
